'All children, except one, grow up.' When Peter Pan flies in through the Darling children's nursery in search of his shadow, the scene is set for a classic tale that has captured the imagination of children and adults for one hundred years.
Wendy and her two brothers join Peter on a series of exciting adventures with the inhabitants of the magical island of the Neverland: the Lost Boys, to whom Wendy becomes 'mother', the mischievous fairy Tinker Bell, the brave Redskins, the Pirates on the Jolly Roger - and their notorious leader, Captain Hook, whose destiny lies in the hands of a crowing boy and a ticking crocodile. To celebrate the centenary of the first public performance of Peter Pan in 1904, this magnificent new edition, complete and unabridged, is published in collaboration with Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, to which J.M. Barrie donated his copyright to Peter Pan. The foreword has been written by David Barrie, the author's great-great-nephew, and award-winning artist Robert Ingpen has contributed over seventy beautiful illustrations. Readers will be captivated as never before by the exciting adventures of Peter Pan and Wendy.
J.M. BARRIE
James Matthew Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 1882, he started working as a journalist. Three years later he moved to London and was soon writing best-selling stories, novels and plays. Although he married, the union was not a happy one, and he was divorced some years later. Peter Pan, Barrie's most enduring work, was first performed in 1904 and immediately captured the imagination of children and adults alike - so much so that Barrie reissued the play in novel form in 1911. In 1929 he donated all his rights to Peter Pan and Wendy to Great Ormond Street Hospital, with which he had had a long association, and his Will confirmed the gift upon his death in 1937.
ROBERT INGPEN Robert Ingpen was born in 1936, and is an established Australian artist and author. He studied illustration art in Melbourne and has designed, illustrated and written more than one hundred published works of fiction and non-fiction. In 1986 Robert Ingpen was awarded the coveted Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children's literature. In recent times he has illustrated editions of other works of classic literature such as Treasure Island, Around the World in Eighty Days, Pinocchio and The Jungle Book. |
